For those of you who don’t already know this, I happen to be married to an extremely talented musician who, on occasion, allows me to collaborate with him and direct his music videos. A year and a half ago I had the extreme pleasure of directing my first video of his, It’s Your Move, and kind of had the time of my life. Since then, whenever he has a new song to promote or an upcoming album to release I pitch him my video ideas for the single and hope he goes for it! It is so incredibly fun for me to work as a story teller in this new and exciting way. To step behind the camera and literally call the shots for a change. I’ve been acting since I was 11 years old and have found directing these short, three minute movies to be a wonderfully refreshing change of pace. I love to give Josh a hard time and joke that I’m the only one who will do these videos for free, but really he’s the one doing me a great favor and I could not be more grateful.
This week we spent several days on his latest video which made it pretty impossible for me to create and write a new post which is why I thought that instead of something crafty, I’d share the behind the scenes footage of the shoot with you. I’m all about including you in my life and how I live it, so I figured sharing what I was up to this week, even though it wasn’t knitting, cooking or entertaining still counts as lifestyle. So hopefully you enjoy this little departure from my crafty side and get a kick out of my story telling one!
Josh is about to release an amazing, blow your socks off, can’t get enough new covers only album. I know you may be thinking that I’m biased, being his wife and all, but I swear to you I’m not. I know good shit when I hear it and this album is going to become your new all time favorite! The first single is his incredibly sultry version of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m on Fire. As soon as I heard it I had a vision of the video and the story I wanted it to tell. Josh went for my idea and we quickly put a plan in place to do the shoot at our ranch in Utah. Since he’s putting this album out independently and with out the interference or the financial benefit of a label he didn’t have a ton of money to spend on a professional film crew, so…we made do! We enlisted the help of our close friends, luring them in with promises of dinners on us and life long favors. Jeremy, my first time Director of Photography owned the camera equipment we needed and also happens to be pretty great at using it! Tony, our friend and neighbor was willing to play the role of my husband driving off to work at the start of the day in his beautiful red Thunderbird. Tasia, Jeremy’s wife and my close girlfriend acted as camera assistant, behind the scenes videographer, caterer and prop master with the help of my other close friend Jill who just happens to be Tony’s actual wife! It was an incredibly fun day filled with laughter, creativity, friendship and storytelling. All the things that make for a perfect day on set!
The album and video will be released on November 17th so stay tuned for all the links and info so you can be the first to enjoy the sweet, sweet sultry tones of Mr. Josh Kelley! Oh and check out his YouTube page for sneak previews of the rest of the album and super cool behind the scenes videos of his genius at work!
P.S. The name of the album is Under The Covers Volume 1 (I came up with that by the way!)
