In My Knitting Basket This Month

Katherine Heigl and yarns from her knitting basket

I recently walked into a lovely knitting store while in Jackson Hole WY and got totally carried away as I so often do among piles of beautiful fibers. The crisp temperatures in Jackson had me gravitating towards the chunkier yarns and cozy fall patterns. I also happen to love projects that knit up quick and can be done in one rogue afternoon while binging my new favorite show. With my time spread so thin these days I’m in need of quick and easy craft projects and these patterns were exactly what I was looking for. So with out further ado, here is what’s in my knitting basket this month.

Katherine Heigl knitting an Azel Pullover

The first project is this chunky and chic Azel Pullover I’m doing for Naleigh in a bright tomato red. I’d also love this in cream, or camel but I thought the red would be so beautiful against Naleigh’s gorgeous complexion and dark hair. I chose Encore Mega yarn and am doing it on size 15 needles instead of the 13’s the pattern calls for. I knit pretty tight…surprise surprise, so the 15’s are working out great for me.

Next is this incredible Boneyard Shawl by Stephen West that I’m doing for my mother for Christmas. Mom, if you’re reading this…well, Merry Christmas! I chose this Baby Alpaca Grande Hues yarn in creamy winter white and a cream and camel mix. In his pattern Stephen says this shawl can be knit on pretty much any yarn with any size needle and I’m taking his word on that! My version will be a heavier chunkier shawl perfect for those chilly winter days in the mountains.

When I need a break from the shawl (which will take longer than a few hours I’m afraid, but won’t be too bad I hope) I’ll pop out one of these adorable Vermonter winter hats. I plan to do one for all of the kids, even little man, in Manos del Uruguay Franca yarn. It’s a bit pricey but the hat only requires one skein which makes it a pretty affordable project. I absolutely love all the Franca colors so it was kinda hard to choose, but I did and truth be told, no matter what I would have chosen I couldn’t go wrong.

For my sixteen year old niece Maddie, I’m knitting up this super funky Drop Stitch Cowl in the Baby Alpaca Grande Hues. I chose a variegated wine color that I know she’ll love for it’s warmth, softness and sophisticated tones. She’s not much of a pink girl and really gravitates towards richer fall hues.

Last but not least is this incredibly easy quick knit children’s sweater that I managed to complete in one 4 hour sitting during the drive from Jackson back home. I bought three different colors of the Encore Mega with plans to do two for Joshua Jr, and one for Adalaide. I especially love the tweed looking yarns for little man. There’s just something about dressing a baby boy up like a little Harvard professor that truly tickles me. I amended the pattern a bit as I mention in the Vlog just to make it more my own, but will probably stick to the original for the next one. I used Purl Soho’s pattern for their color tipped scarf as the basis for my tiny baby button on one.

This is my kind of thing and it couldn’t come at a better time. I’m learning myself to read English patterns. I taught myself to read English crochet patterns and I find them easier to read than the ones in my own language. How weird is that. The Boneyard Skawl is my favorite out of all your projects and that yarn, oh my goodness, just wow! Those colors are amazing. I think I’m gonna use that project to teach myself more reading English patterns. Just have to see what yarns they offer here that are nice and chunky. Love those winter white and camel creme mix. Okay now I have to continue on my crochet project, a babyblanket I promised someone. Loved the video and your kids are gorgeous, specially that bouncing baby boy. Just too cute. ❤ With love from the Netherlands

    Hello Katherine,
I absolutely love your blog and you and your family make Utah living look wonderful! I am new to knitting and would like some easy fun projects to give to family for Christmas this year. I have seen the really chuncky blankets you knit with your arms but the yarn seems SO expensive. Do you have any tips or suggestions for us newbies?

Btw…I LOVE all your comfy looking tops…

This is actually one of the main reasons I joined your blog. Seeing another maker in the world who makes something that we all can relate to. It’s like getting together with an old friend to create some magical pieces. The way you make all your kiddos creations of love touches my heart in so many ways. I have a 5 yr old son and let me tell you, boys are so magical in their own little ways. They def have their momma’s hearts for sure. Please don’t ever stop creating. I would love to see your finished pieces. Thank you for sharing!

so much yarny goodness! Love it. I haven’t knit in months and just started a hat yesterday in order to get back into the swing of it, myself. I have 2 sweaters for myself in the wings and one for a friend’s dog (they like to stay warm, too, or so I’m told).

Thanks for the two blog suggestions. I’ve followed both and look forward to the interviews you mentioned. Do you do those (or guest posts) often?

Oh I absolutely loved watching this vlog! Your passion for knitting with those lovely looking, squashy, chunky yarns is evident and a joy for a fellow maker to watch. (Your son going to town in his jumperoo was also cute!) I am a crocheter and just finished a multicoloured/grey blanket for myself which was 2 YEARS in the making! Having my second baby kind of got in the way haha.

Next up is a Bertie baby blanket (Little Doolally does lovely patterns!), a teddy bear (both gifts) and a bobble hat for my aforementioned baby who is now almost 2.

Learning how to knit is definitely on my ‘to do’ list though. Have fun with all your upcoming projects!

Hahah! Izzie knits like me! That part of her character was written into the show because the writers knew that I liked to knit! I have done a few projects with the super bulky yarn and loved how they turned out but find them to be kinda awkward projects to do, but I’m sure I’ll keep doing them!

I’ve been slowly teaching myself to knit over the past three years. Summers are nuts for us, and I tend to knit more in the fall and winter, so this was the perfect b/vlog for me because I am also brainstorming this season’s projects. You and I chose the same hat–the Vermonter! Great minds! Can’t wait to do that one. I also try to teach myself a new skill every year. Last year I learned how to knit lace (still need lots of practice, but I get the basics), and this year I learned cables and I am trying to master stripes/changing colors. My first attempt at a striped hat for my husband was kind of a disaster, so I was a little discouraged. How long have you been knitting? How do you organize your patterns/yarn stash/notions? Any tips for a semi newbie?

I love how motivated you are to keep learning! I’ve been knitting since I was about 19. Feels like a lifetime now! I keep my yarn organized by weight and needle size. So fingerling weights all go together. Yarn that uses size 8 needles all go together. Bulky yarns all go together and so on. You don’t sound like a newbie to me at all! You probably have a few things to teach me!

      • Cathlene Uhl

That makes sense. I’ve been organizing by color, and although it’s pretty, it’s not really practical.

I was inspired by your love of quick, easy, chunky yarn projects (I haven’t done much with chunkier yarn yet) so I cast on a chunky hat last night! And I am loving it! You are right, it’s satisfying when something knits up so quickly.

I loved your post about your solo time in Jackson Hole. My hubby is sending me, my sister, and my bestie away for a long weekend to San Francisco next week as a combo birthday/anniversary gift. We are a military family, so I don’t often get a break because we don’t live near our extended family members. Really looking forward to taking that time for ME and recharging.

Looking forward to your next project post! Thanks.

The little jacket with the built in scarf you are working on is to die for!! How unique! I’ve recently seen super large type yarn and wool spools on Facebook. It makes a very large crochet shell looking throw blanket. They’re beautiful. I just need some motivation, time to myself, and a video tutorial on how to knit. I’m not very crafty. Sadly.

        Break into this!
        https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mile-a-minute-chunky-blanket
If you can make a single crochet, you can make this blanket. The border is a little more difficult, but it looks good without it too.

The thing about crochet? You only have one stitch on your needle most of the time, you can stop at any point (no more …”let me just finish this…one row…”) and if you accidentally dropped a stitch, you only lost…one stitch. Yay! I also like knitting, but crochet is my first love. Hope you like it too 🙂

    Hiya Katherine!
I first found your blog via a FB post and I *think* you were arm knitting (?) or some sort of knitting for sure. So being a fellow yarnie and a big fan of your work as an actress I joined your blog. I have enjoyed following your posts, most recently the birth of your son and your witty musings on that whole adventure! It’s so nice to know that behind all the glamour is a friendly, down to earth person who has the same foibles as we all do. I am primarily a crocheter and recently taught myself basic knitting with the many great tutorial videos out there. I do get a bit tense knitting and fear making mistakes because it’s not as easy to fix as crocheting. Do you crochet as well and do you ever post your projects on Ravelry? Have you ever checked out Alexandra Tavels designs on her site Two of Wands? Really really stylish! Other favs of mine are Mama in a Stitch, All about Ami, and Megmade with Love. Have fun with all that yummy yarn!

I am also new to your blog and looking forward to catching up on it! 🙂 Just wanted to say that it was incredible getting to meet you when you and your husband were here in Fort Collins! When you stop by next time, you will have to come visit me at a new pie shop and restaurant opening, “Ginger & Baker!” I will be making pastries there . Also just wanted to mention that the video of you with your son while Josh was playing Christmas music on the piano, warmed my ❤ and made my day. PS “27 Dresses” is my favorite movie of all time… “50, wow!” Haha

    Hi Katherine,
My name is Julia and I love crocheting. My grandma taught me how to crochet when I was around 11. She’ll teach me how to knit and I hope it won’t be too hard. I love seeing the things that you make. They are beautiful.

Love it! You’re just like all my sheeples – “so many projects, so little time.” I guess it’s the hazard of the job for creative people. Thanks for sharing a glimpse of your real life with us! ♥️

I have never had the back for doing knitting, although I would really love to learn, but I have been doing pretty well with crocheting.
I have made afghans, baby booties, and even learning new projects and stitches. I’m over 50 by the way, but it is so much company in the winter and about the only time I get into doing it. Thanks for all that you share and for your lovely videos and projects….. Donna

    Hi Katherine,
I love seeing your blog and pictures of your farm. You are so talented. I lived over in Poea, just a few miles from you for a while. You actually bought some veggies from me at the Oakley farmers market. I didnt believe it was really you, until you walked away and people were coming up to you wanting to take your picture. Thank you for doing this blog. It’s been really fun getting to see the real life side of you 🙂

My wife has been knitting for decades and about 5 years ago we decided to go on holiday to TURKEY specifically because the area produces ACRYLIC wool for the whole world.

To buy a ball of wool(yarn) the average price of a ball of wool is about 1 dollar Naturally specialised stuff costs a little more but the most we have paid is about 9 lira which was about 2 british pounds. or 5 dollars approx.

The quality is amazing and the people that sell it are so friendly its quite easy to * barter/negotiate* a lower price especially if you are trying to speak the language as they respect you for trying.

NAKO is one of the brands often bought but as the wife to date has more than 2000 balls of wool to hand i know i am in store for some peaceful nights 🙂 but she puts her knitting to great use making * twiddle muffs* for people with dementia or other illnesses
So its all for a good cause.
i work a lot of the time for many hours driving Limousines in and around London so she needed something to keep her occupied
    * when the grand children are not around *
would love to chat one day when you are not busy.

Am a follower of twitter pic of me and Sir Roger Moore is my picture

Your blog is fabulous! It looks like we both share a love for baby alpaca yarn. My first and most amazing experience with alpaca yarn was in a Peruvian village in Cuzco where we watched Quechua women spin, dye, and weave baby alpaca hair into an amazing tapestry. I can’t wait to go back . It truly was a life changing adventure. The boneyard shawl has been on my project to do list for some time now. I’m excited to follow your progress with it in hopes it will give me the motivation to finally get started on it too! Lately I have been experimenting with creating my own patterns, and I was wondering if you ever do the same. My passion is creating knitting designs and I hope to eventually start my own pattern shop. My collection is growing! I am inspired by all the amazing knitters out there, like the creator of The Velvet Acorn designs. Oh for the love of yarn, I could look at her projects all day long. I can’t wait to see how your projects turn out when all of that incredible yarn twists and turns around those needles! The best gifts are the ones made with love

I make a variety of whimsical animals and other fun things…mostly ornaments to hang on trees or where ever..I use mostly merino wool, but LOVE alpaca too and it felts wonderfully….If you would like to see what I make I am on Instagram at Woven Dimensions….happy knitting!

    Hi Katherine!
Thanks so much for sharing what you’re making with us. I love your style and taste! The red that you chose makes me want to go and buy a big bundle of red yarn (which would typically be way out of my comfort zone). It’s so gorgeous!

And thanks so much for the recommendation to check out my blog. What an honor. Can’t wait to see your projects all finished up. 🙂 Have a lovely week!

Thanks so much for sharing your current knitting projects. I’m always looking for something new to knit. And like you I like the quick knits. I think I like the immediate satisfaction of a finished project. I’ve been busy making messy bun hats this season but I think this weekend I’m gonna set aside some time and whip up the Vermonter pattern you posted! Looking forward to more knitting ideas you blog about. 🙂

So I knit the Vermonter hat after work, (it really was a quick knit!). The only thing I would change is I’d add another 4 knit rows and a Purl row before I start decreasing. I felt it just fit. I like that extra little bit on the top of my hats so I’m off to knit my second one with the modification. Ohhh another Friday evening knitting! Lol

Hi Katherine, or “hey”, as they say here in the south. It was sooo wonderful to come across your video on what’s in your knitting basket! Don’t know when or how you got started knitting but, you’ve got not just great talent as an actress but, also are a talented needle artist. Presently, I’m not in position to shop for my family, yarn shopping included. As one who knits a crocheters myself, I love how you are sharing your love for showing gratitude to your family through the gift of handknits. I believe those items will be cherished forever because of the thought, creativity, personal time and love you’ve poured into them. Even in the photo albums. Maybe, someday, I will be able to do such for my family. I am a mother of one and grandmother (Gram), of two. One each, girl (6) and boy (4 mo), Gram’s “Little Man”! Was calling him that before he was born. Lol!

Looking forward to seeing the finished projects. Hope you’ll continue to share!

    Thanks!

I loved the interview on Mama In A Stitich! I wondered if you really knitted like Izzy! Greys is my binge show lately while I crochet. I love doing fast projects for instant gratification! Mostly lots of hats right now so I can give them all away when it starts getting cold. Thanks for sharing, it’s nice to see younger people keeping the craft alive!

My name is Carina and I’m a Yarn’0holic. It has been 9 days since I last bought yarn. I’m putting it to good use though, making a(nother) beautiful, soft squishy blanket. What I love about blankets is that, once you get the hang of the pattern, you can almost mindlessly work at it while watching TV or listening to audiobooks. Sadly, not enough time for this. 🙁

Did I mention that I love yarn? I LOVE yarn! But it absolutely has to be soft. Squeeky yarn gives me the heebie jeebies … (I had to stop writing for a moment to allow time for the shiver to travel down my spine).

I have a ridiculously large yarn stash which, unfortunately, I cannot show off, as I may get hate-mail. But I have plans for all those fuzzy balls of happiness, if only I could squeeze more time out of one day…sigh.

Looking forward to seeing your finished projects!

    With love, from South Africa

PS: I gave a crochet pattern recommendation somewhere up here in the comments, an easy…wait for it…blanket pattern! 🙂

I just happen to be Knitflexing Grey’s Anatomy and saw that in Season 2 you garter knit a bulky weight sweater and I believe you actually wore that sweater later in a baking scene. By any chance do you remember the pattern? I’ve looked on Ravelry but so far haven’t found it. It looked like the perfect mindless knit without being a scarf or cowl and of course garter is very in right now.

Katherine: I stumbled upon your page today, and am so inspired to see a celebrity knitting and crazy-crafting just like I do!!! I mean, I’m insane at times. I’m dealing with recovery from alcoholism, and knitting is saving me. But sometimes I feel like such a boring loser, doing this craft that people don’t really understand. Along comes you, happily doing the same things I do!!! Thank-you, I feel like you and I would be friends. My current obsession is socks. I travel a great deal, and take photos. I’m in the midst of translating the mood of my photos into sock designs. My current pair is inspired by the iconic Laudurée Paris box. I’m on Ravelry as Juliets-coffee. I’d be so honoured if you looked at my work, but regardless thank you so much for validating my crazy. It’s saving my life, quite literally. You should try socks!!!! Perfect for grab and go. I use a tiny 9 inch circular, it’s addictive!

I do hope you’ll consider keeping this as regular seasonal posting. You inspired me to do the hand warmers that I didn’t know I needed beforehand and for that I thank you. Hope you and your beautiful family are doing well.
