Hourglass Underground

I even ordered a couple of well fitting supportive nursing bras from Jenette.
They not only fit beautifully and made access a breeze but they made me feel beautiful too which is a real blessing to a new mom!

You might not know this, but I’m very serious about my bras! I kind of have to be. When I was a VERY underdeveloped 14 year old I actually prayed…and even fasted for a bigger bosom. Fearing prayer and fasting would not be enough I also cut out photos of Victoria’s Secret models from my mother’s catalog and pasted them into my diary with handwritten pleas for at least a B cup by summer to fill out a cute bikini. When I hear talk of intention work and the power of manifestation I always think back to my first experience doing both. Not only did I end up with a B cup by that summer, by the following I was well on my way to the DD cup I ended up with. I mean if that doesn’t make you an intention setting believer I don’t know what will. A word to the wise though. Make sure you’re very specific when setting those intentions. I forgot to mention that I’d like to skip the hips and ass of the well endowed. I also forgot to mention perky…ah well, can’t have it all right?

Being a woman who needs support (like I said, I forgot to mention perky) I was lucky enough to be steered to the mecca for busty women, Jenette Bras, (“where The Alphabet Starts at ‘D'”) by a female director I was working with in Los Angeles. Jenette, the owner, is an actress with one biological child and two adopted — sound familiar? — and she has started a non-profit that gives bras to foster care girls. Their main focus is fitting girls for prom at a wonderful event called Glamour Gowns, and it’s amazing. I am thrilled to help Jenette spread the word about her wonderful cause and hope you all can find a small way to get involved.

Here’s what Jenette had to say about it in an interview she did for The Chronicle of Social Change:

“When these girls see and feel themselves well-dressed, maybe for the first time, the psychological effect is tangible. It’s mind-expanding. They see possibilities for themselves that were not on their horizon the day before. They glow, their eyes moisten, and they start to shine. This is why I always have a waiting list for volunteers.”

Being a teenage girl is hard enough with loving parents to guide you. Imagine what it would be like without family resources and a mother to help you dress properly. Here’s Jenette again:

“The bra fitting is a positive experience of intimacy. The lives of these girls are written on their bodies. They’re overweight, underweight, tattooed… We tell them the band needs to fit snugly around the ribcage. ‘The support comes from the center of your body.’ ‘This bra comes with straps, you will be able to use it after the prom, it will make your clothes look better.’ We are demonstrating the possibility of self-creation.”

“One girl came in, dressed in baggy, sexless clothes asking just to be minimized – strapped down. We gave her advice on doing that and we also gave her the space to explore other possibilities. She hesitantly tried on a basque we had and it fit her perfectly. Her jaw dropped when she saw herself. She seemed to gain two inches in height and she said, ‘it feels like I’m being held.’”

Jenette’s non-profit is called Hourglass Underground (referring to her cadre of busty volunteers!). She was struggling to raise enough money to buy bras each year, so to simplify the process she has launched a new initiative at Jenette Bra this year called STRAPLESS is MORE. 100% of the profit from every strapless bra sold at her stores goes to support Hourglass Underground and buy bras!

I no longer live full time in L.A so getting into her store is difficult but thankfully I can peruse their selection on the website and have her ship what I find to me in Utah. So even if you aren’t near a Jenette Bras store you can hit up the website to order a beautiful, perfectly fitting strapless (and a few other pretty ones just cause you always need one or two well fitting bras that look perfect with or without clothes on) and be a part of helping a young girl feel beautiful and special on her prom night. If you’re not in need of any strapless bras she also accepts contributions on the website, naturally!

So THAT’S where I went wrong. Not only bras, but I’ve always loved lingerie. Started buying beautiful silky things when I was a teen and still continue to do so in my late thirties. But, I did not only end up with my mom’s ‘G’ cup, I don’t even fill a C. I’m still annoyed at that and if I had the money, I’d be getting implants in a second. Nothing overly big, just to fill out a beautiful bra that’s more proportionate to my body. But I guess I should have been cutting out the pictures in magazines and praying and wishing. Either way, I love you site. I love your home in the mountains, (I could never leave my mountains in British Columbia). And I love your honesty. Your Instagram page is my dream. Beautiful ranch, surrounded by fresh air, a loving family and killer style.

    Dear Katherine,
As always a heartwarming story from you.
Hope that this cause gets to many women and that Jenette can continue with her good work. You, for sure, helped those girls a lot with your story on the blog so other women can follow your example.
And of course now I have to mention that you looked stunning in Home sweet hell! You were always my fav actress and I am so happy to keep reading your blog now and see how in fact simple and kind person you are.

Isn’t it amazing what the right bra can do? I found the most amazing bra a few years ago while visiting the States and was so excited when I went back because I wanted to buy a boatload of them, but them they stopped making them! Aaaaarrrgghh! But reading about Jenette and these girls, I think about my drawer full of bra’s…we have so much to be thankful for. Thank you for sharing their story.

while you are in toronto… i love ‘lovely lingerie’ in woodbridge for bra fittings… the women are super helpful and knowledgeable and i always walk out with at least 2 when i go. there’s not much on the website but the address is there. i think you would find it worth the trip. bras are super important to me as well, especially ones that fit and this is where i can get great quality bras that fit.
http://www.lovelylingerie.ca/ i know there’s others downtown but ‘lovely lingerie’ now has me so i haven’t checked out the others.
