Holidays 2017: Christmas Decor

Christmas stockings

My mixed metals Thanksgiving table is what truly inspired my 2017 Christmas decor. I loved the look of all those glorious gleaming metals paired together in one cohesive way so I figured, why not carry the look into Christmas? I found relatively inexpensive shatterproof ornaments at Michaels that fit the theme perfectly and had a LOT of ornaments of my own I could mix in. I built myself another wreath for the front door with more finds from Michaels. Though I’m starting to run out of storage space for all these wreaths, maybe I’ll use a few for a fun giveaway and one of you who likes the look of them could use it for your next holiday inspired front door! Thoughts?

Anyway, back to my decor inspiration. I filled the same lanterns I used for my glitter skulls at Halloween with the same Michaels ornaments I’d found for the tree. I used miniature versions of the ornaments to decorate two faux trees I also found at Michaels (perhaps I should buy stock in the place.) I used tons of mercury glass orbs my mother lent me from her extensive Christmas stash and filled them with battery operated Christmas lights, making them glow in a slightly otherworldly way as darkness crept in. I placed flameless candles on every spare spot I could and threw some of the faux flowers left over from the wreath onto tables and delicately wove them around the candles and glittering ornaments. All in all I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. It was glitzy, sparkling and warm. The whole look had a slight vintage feel about it as well that I absolutely adored. Here are all the photos so you can see for yourself.

I had intended to get the tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving, but because I was in a bit of a crappy birthday slump I wasn’t in the mood to make it happen. Which meant our tree had to wait until after my trip to N.Y which is a bit late for me, but as I write this it’s still up…so I guess the extra weeks in January made up for the lack of weeks before Christmas. Our family has indulged in the matching Christmas pajama tradition for the last five years and this year was no exception. I found the adorable ones we’re wearing on the Target website and ordered a pair for every last one of us, including the dogs! They were much more reasonably priced than the jammies of Christmas past and cozy as all get out.  We got ourselves all dressed up, or down rather, in our p.j’s and had a family only tree trimming party. It was kind of the best part of my holiday decorating and I’m determined to make it a new family tradition. Usually I fly solo on the whole tree trimming thing but it was way more fun to do it as a family now that the girls are old enough not to drop and break any ornaments!

I am in love and inspired by your mixed metals Christmas decor! I think a wreath give way would be awesome. I am all in, let me know what I need to do to win. I have been trying to get my family to embrace the matching jammies, but the hubby and almost 18 year old aren’t having it. POO! Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories. xoxo

Very nice…..from my aged vantage point I have found that no matter what things we have done, great and small, the very best, most memorable, and most important were the things we shared with our families and children. Love the family photos and your decor is very christmas-y…a creative person can not be denied!!! We are just outside Boulder where the landscape is similar. I find the spacious mountain views to be very peaceful. Lovely for you to share with us these sweet moments.

Hi Katie! Good to hear from you! Love your Christmas decor! I know all too wel the delima of not having space to store things! I even have a basement, but my goal is not to clutter, but un-clutter! As I am getting older I am realizing the importance of getting rid of things too! Oh sure I have favorites I’m not willing to part with yet, but plenty of things I am ready to get rid of! I too am a wreath collector , I always have a different one to go in my front door for every time of year. This year, I collect bottlebrushed trees, and sat them all around with my 3ft tall decorated and lighted tree, that day on my piano. Not too much to have to store, but just enough to give Christmas ambience. I think that’s a great idea about giving one of your wreaths away. Not only are they beautiful but it would be an item for someone to cherish, brings it came from you! BTW, your baby looks a LOT like you!! That sweet smile is a heart-breaker! Take care for now, Marcia

Before I started looking at the decor, I was actually going to complain that you didn’t put up the woodland animals from the prior year, because I loved them so much. (And for several months afterward, whenever I came across something similar in a store, I’d think “That would have looked really great at the Heigl/Kelley house.”) But this was gorgeous! So bright and sparkly and cheerful! And all of you looked so happy and cute in your red jammies. 🙂 You outdid yourself – again!

You have an amazing talent in decorating as well as an actress/producer. Thank you for sharing your precious moments. Your family is beautiful and seems very happy. I also struggle with storing decorations. I fully u derstand the troubles. Out with the old and in with the new. Your give away contest is a good idea and brings great joy to the creator knowing a family is e noting that creation. We built a storage closet in our oversized garage to compensate my addiction to buying new decorations every year.

Keep on smiling and sharing. We wish you good health. Lanelle

I love seeing you and your family in these beautiful moments. Wishing you health and happiness.
