Pretty Useful Things

Over the years it has gotten more and more difficult to think of the perfect gift for Mother’s Day. As a kid in school the teachers would sit us down in art class, throw some clay, paint, crayons and paper at us and order us to make mom something special. As a young adult full of angst and deep, deep feelings I would sit down weeks in advance of the big day and start writing my mother poetry. Really profound, meaningful poetry that I hope she never, ever shares with anyone! When I started becoming more successful as an actor and could afford to buy my mother something fancy, we started making Bergdorf Goodman a Mother’s Day tradition.Continue Reading

Just Keep Knitting, Knitting, Knitting…

Katherine Heigl Knitting

Just keep knitting. Just keep knitting. Just keep knitting, knitting, knitting…

My sister came up to Utah for the holidays this year and this was the mantra she and I kept repeating as we feverishly worked to finish our knit gifts for family members. For any of you parents or animated film fans out there it’s a take on Dori the fishes’ song just keep swimming from Finding Nemo (yeah now it’s gonna be stuck in your head too, sorry)!

I included some photos of said knit gifts in a previous post, but wanted to share with you the patterns used and the shortcuts I took to get the gifts done in time. Continue Reading

Sweet Circle Skirt

Naleigh feeding the mini horses in her cute skirt

About four years ago I made Naleigh an adorable circle skirt that she still wears to this day! It’s like some kind of magic was bestowed upon it as I sewed that made it able to miraculously grow with my child.

It was one of my first sewing projects and was not only easy to make, but totally adorable with a simple tee shirt or cardigan! When and if she finally grows out of it, it will be handed down to her sister to wear for the next four years to come!Continue Reading

Great Expectations!

Christmas Gifts Handmade By Katie

Soooooo… Christmas is officially over and though I didn’t accomplish everything that I had hoped to in the handmade gift department, I did accomplish a lot and I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out.

I’m not gonna lie, I stressed myself out completely trying to finish everything at the 11th hour and breathed a huge sigh of relief when it was all over and done with! But hey, what’s Christmas without a little self induced, set my expectations way too high, kind of stress?! Despite the mad rush to get everything on my list done, I had a lot of fun with these gifts. I loved the creativity of making everything by hand and was incredibly proud of each finished project, flaws and all!

I wasn’t able to do five different crates as I had hoped (again the high expectation thing can be a bit of an issue for me!), but I did do the ones I was most excited about. The tea lovers crate, the mixologist crate, and the chocolate lovers crate. The rest of the crate ideas I can save for birthday gifts, hostess gifts, or even just an I’m thinking of you gift!

My next post will include all the recipes, patterns and shortcuts I used to create my gift crates, so if any of you are feeling inspired you can get cooking and crafting!Continue Reading
