Color Dip This

Color Dipped Cowl

I had so much fun doing the color dipped scarf and was thrilled with how beautifully it turned out, that I decided to modify the pattern and apply it to a cozy delicious cowl! I got the idea from Purl Soho’s Mountain Cowl pattern. On its own with no modifications the Mountain Cowl is glorious, but I was so in love with the color dipped effect I was sure it would be just as beautiful in a neck warmer!

Color Dipped Cowl

Using Gentle Giant and my 17 needles, I embarked on figuring out the fishermen’s rib in the round. Once I got it down (I had to rip it out and start over three times before I figured it out) the cowl ended up being even easier than the scarf and moved at lightning speed. It took me four hours to complete the cowl plus one hour to ice my hands once it was done!

I had intended to give the cowl to my niece as a gift but I cast on too many stitches and the cowl ended up being far too big for a girl who stands 5’4″ tall. When she put it on she looked like she was being attacked by an angry muppet! So I’m keeping the cowl until I find someone tall enough to pull it off, perhaps I’ll keep it for myself. In the pattern below I adjusted the cast on to be 10 stitches less, but you could probably go even 10 stitches less than that if you want the cowl to be less bulky and more tailored.

  • Continue on in MC until you’re happy with the length making sure to leave enough yarn to cast off.

That’s it! It’s incredibly simple. Though for a novice it may sound complicated, but once you get the hang of the knit below and purl below you’ll be shocked by how easy it is!

Thanks for the inspiration! I always wondered while watching “Greys Anatomy” if you could really knit that well or if it was staged, then I came across your blog and saw all the amazing pieces you have made! I bought some needles and yarn yesterday and have been teaching myself the basics!

As a completely obsessed knitter, I love seeing your projects! I’m a NICU nurse and knitting is definitely therapy for me after a really stressful day. I’m lucky enough to have a really great knitting group, and love the online knitting community. I have to ask, are you on Ravelry?

I love the way you coordinate color together even a contrast but it looks very elegance and mellow. I don’t know how to knit only crochet but those yarns are gigantic
